Wyoming Lottery Off to a Strong Start

Despite stagnant state lottery sales nationwide, officials are optimistic about new lottery’s future.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – It’s been less than five months since the first lottery ticket was sold in Wyoming, but state lottery CEO Jon Clontz says he already has big plans for more games in 2015.

According to news reports, the lottery has sold more than $6.5 million worth of tickets since it opened for business on Aug. 24, with individual players winning more than $843,000 total. Clontz reported last week that the state has already increased its lottery retailer base to 446 stores, as well as making an effort to engage retailers to get their ideas and help resolve any problems.

While Wyoming lottery players have been able to participate in the two largest multistate lotteries, Powerball and Mega Millions, they also want more state-level games, which usually offer lower jackpots but better odds of drawing a winning ticket. That’s why the lottery plans to unveil its first state-based game later this month, followed by two more games this summer.

Despite its strong start, the state’s lottery does face several challenges, including Wyoming’s relatively small population and the lottery law’s ban of “instant gratification” games like scratch-offs.
