NEW YORK - The Associated Press reported last week that Dublin, Ohio-based Wendy??s is testing a heartier pretzel-like bun at select locations.

A spokesman for Wendy's declined to confirm the tests or provide any details, but the "Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger" has been advertised recently as a limited-time offer at a Wendy's in Miami with customers posting pictures and talking about the menu item on Twitter.

The AP writes that one 20 -year-old student said he tried the pretzel bacon cheeseburger and it was better than he expected. "It's like something you'd see at an actual burger place, not a fast food restaurant," he said.

Wendy's executives discussed the possibility of the pretzel bun at an investor conference this past summer, notes the AP. Gerard Lewis, who heads innovation at the QSR chain, said during the conference that the goal was to provide "five star quality breads at three-star pricing," noting that Wendy's has own its own bakery, giving the company more flexibility to produce different types of bread.

In October, Wendy??s CMO Craig Bahner told QSRweb.com that breads "are a focus and we think bread carriers are a way to leverage our capability and a way to differentiate."
