Dunkin' Doubles

The coffee chain plans to double its number of U.S. locations over the next 20 years, but continues to stay quiet on if or when it will enter California.

CANTON, Mass. - Expect to see more Dunkin?? Donuts locations popping up around the United States in the 20 years. The company has nearly 7,000 locations nationwide, with plans to double that number.

One state, however, isn??t running on Dunkin. The Los Angeles Times reports that California, a market saturated with competitors such as Starbucks and Jamba Juice, and home to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, has been void of Dunkin locations since the company pulled out from the state years ago.

Dunkin isn??t showing its cards, however, on if or when the company will tap into the California market: "The western part of the United States represents a significant growth opportunity for Dunkin'. ??We remain focused on a steady, disciplined approach to development, moving out in a continuous fashion from market where we already have restaurants, providing for marketing and supply chain efficiencies," according to a statement.

Dunkin spokeswoman Karen J. Raskopf told the newspaper: "We believe there is tremendous potential for Dunkin' Donuts to expand around the world, including, someday, in California."

The news shouldn??t come as too much of a surprise. In September 2011, the company announced that its western expansion plans would stop at New Mexico. "As we expand our footprint across the U.S., it will be part of our strategy, but for now, we don??t have a time set for California," John Dawson, chief development officer for Dunkin?? Brands, told the newspaper. "But when we enter, we??re going to enter strong, and it??ll be something very few people will miss."
