Starbucks Adds ‘Flat White’ to Menu

Coffeehouse chain brings Australia’s espresso-based beverage to United States.

NEW YORK – Beginning today, coffee drinkers in the United States will get to try out a coffee concoction believed to have originated in Australia in the 1980s, thanks to Starbucks.

A flat white is espresso and steamed milk, what U.S. consumers call a latte. However, “coffee connoisseurs note that an artfully-made flat white will have a higher coffee-to-milk ratio, and a more velvety texture,” reports CNN.

Starbucks says that its version of the flat white is made with two ristretto shots, topped with "a thin layer of velvety steamed whole milk and finished with a latte art dot,” reports the news source, adding that the new beverage is likely part of an effort by Starbucks to attract more sophisticated coffee consumers.

Whether U.S. coffee drinkers will adopt the Starbucks version of the flat white remains to be seen, but one Australian website is already claiming victory, saying that Americans will finally be able to “enjoy a real coffee.”
