Jernigan Oil Company, parent company of North Carolina-based Duck Thru Food Stores, announced the deployment of its first electric vehicle charger in Columbia, North Carolina. The company partnered with FreeWire Technologies for the project and installed its Boost Charger 200.

The project was co-funded by Jernigan Oil Company Inc. and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Air Quality through the use of the Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Funding.

According to a company press release, the installation of the charger “allows Duck Thru to offer alternate fueling options at this location to meet the needs of EV customers traveling through Eastern North Carolina.”

While this is the first EV charger to be installed at Duck Thru, the company plans to continue installing chargers for its customers in eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia.

The FreeWire charger installed at the site can provide charging to two EVs simultaneously by using an internal battery to increase the speed of charge instead of directly using grid power, the companies said. A single EV can charge at 200kWs, or two EVs can charge simultaneously at 100kWs. This charger can charge all Level 3 compatible EVs, as well as Teslas with an adapter.

Duck Thru Food Stores originated in 1983 and is based out of Ahoskie, North Carolina. There are currently 56 Duck Thru locations in eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia.
