The NACS Q2 2023 Global Convenience Store Industry Report, which provides industry-leading data, macro trends and analysis for 31 countries in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Central and South America, is now available for download.

“We are delighted to continue into our second year of one of our newest partnerships, our quarterly report with NIQ of sales and trends from dozens of countries around the world,” said NACS President and CEO Henry Armour.  One of the reasons convenience retailing thrives around the globe is because the convenience retailing industry “is adept at refining how it presents convenience to consumers in their terms,” said Armour.

Highlights from the second-quarter report include:

  • In Q2 2023, across the countries included in the report, only Hong Kong c-stores experienced a decline in sales versus a year ago.
  • Fifteen of the countries saw growth over 10.1%, with nine of those in Latin America, four in Europe, and two in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • While overall growth in Q2 was strong, it was not as strong as in Q1 2023; most countries (19 of 31) reported weaker sales growth in Q2 compared to Q1.
  • In Canada, non-alcoholic packaged beverages (19.0%) and packaged ice cream & novelties (10.5%) saw the strongest sales growth, while packaged bread (-9.4%) saw the largest decline.
  • Top categories for sales growth in the United States included liquor (15.7%) and packaged sweet snacks (11.8%). Fluid milk (-10.0%), ice (-5.7%) and cigarettes (-4.7%) had the largest declines in sales.

“We are excited to share our Q2 2023 report on worldwide convenience channel trends,” said Tracey Massey, CEO, NIQ. “We are confident that these insights will be of use to operators as they navigate the challenges and opportunities the rest of this year may present.”
