FDA to Host Webinar on Tobacco Product Standards

Submit questions by Friday about the agency’s plan to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) is holding a webinar regarding its plans to advance two tobacco product standards and how stakeholders can participate in the rulemaking process. The webinar be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. EST.

The webinar will address the FDA’s planned tobacco product standards to prohibit menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes and to prohibit characterizing flavors, except tobacco, in cigars, along with the FDA’s rulemaking process and how stakeholders can submit comments on proposed rules. The FDA will also talk about available cessation resources and tools.

This webinar will feature a presentation from the FDA’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity, the CTP’s Office of Health Communication and Education and the CTP’s Office of Regulations.

The FDA will address viewer questions during a question-and-answer session. Speakers will respond to some of the most commonly submitted stakeholder questions; however, the FDA will respond only to questions submitted by Feb. 4. To submit a question, you must register for the webinar and complete the appropriate field on the registration form.

The FDA will not communicate the contents of the proposed rules or additional details about the timeline for their release—this is a webinar only regarding the FDA’s rulemaking process and upcoming tobacco product standards.

Once the FDA proposes its rulemaking, it is imperative that retailers provide feedback and weigh in with the agency. NACS plans to submit comments and will provide retailers with detailed instructions on how to do the same.
